What Is the Best Air Door for 2026?
What Installation and Operating Conditions Influence Results
An air door’s real-world performance depends on the opening it must protect. AMCA Publication 220-21 provides standardized testing for airflow and velocity distribution, but its laboratory ratings do not guarantee building-level energy savings.
ASHRAE Standard 90.1-2022 recognizes qualifying air curtains as an alternative to vestibules. Its criteria include AMCA 220 testing and a minimum discharge velocity of 2 m/s at floor level. That is a useful design check, not a universal promise. Measure the full doorway.
Installation details matter. Mount the unit near the lintel, keep its discharge unobstructed, and align the air stream across the opening. Check door width, ceiling height, cross-drafts, and pressure changes from Exhaust Fans.
A windy loading bay behaves differently from a sheltered shop entrance. During commissioning, record velocity at several points, not just the center. Air can still leak around side jambs.
AMCA’s controlled test data is valuable, but field conditions add uncertainty. I would treat projected savings as an estimate, then compare seasonal energy use and indoor comfort before adjusting settings.
